On August 30, 2023, President Ali Bongo was deposed by the putschist military junta, which held him captive in his residence to this day, under constant military surveillance.

The Gabonese authorities declare Ali Bongo free to move around, but this is not the case. In reality, he can neither leave his home nor have any means of communication.

Only a few visits authorized by the highest authorities are granted to him. Ali Bongo was questioned by the judicial authorities to whom he denounced the lack of foundation of the absurd charges brought against his wife and son.

In May 2024, he went on a hunger strike, alongside his sons Jalil and Bilal Bongo, in protest against the arbitrary detention and torture of Sylvia and Noureddin.

On September 18, 2024, Ali Bongo published, through his lawyers, an open letter to the Gabonese people in which he announced his retirement from political life and requested the release of his family.

In February 2025, he went on a second hunger strike which seriously deteriorated his health. Ali Bongo suffered from fainting and was bedridden under medical supervision.

Since the coup, Ali Bongo has continued to proclaim the innocence of his wife and son, whom he describes as scapegoats. He has tried several times to enter into dialogue with the highest authorities, who systematically refuse to speak with him.
